Foodaholic

Very high on our list of things we enjoying doing while traveling is eating.  Not just at nice sit down restaurants but trying some of the local neighborhood eateries as well; think taco, fruit, corn in a cup, and you name it stands.  If you are into organic, then you’re in luck most everything sold at the stands are locally grown and or prepared.  Here are our favorites.

So many different types of Mexican dishes to pick from, where to start? I honestly don’t think we will be able to try all of them and most likely will blog about food several times on our page.  I’m usually the adventure eater in our relationship, my wife can be picky at times and it is hard for me to convince her to try something out of her comfort zone. We mostly enjoy eating at mom and pop eateries rather than the big restaurants but once in a while we will go to a nice restaurant while traveling, to see what they have to in store. We feel that the “hole in the wall” eateries have tastier food, we do tend to make sure that the place also looks clean. Usually other travelers and locals will recommend their favorites to us.

Among our favorites are the Esquites (corn in a cup), mostly corn, chili powder, lime juice, mayonnaise, and cheese. However, there maybe some minor differences from region to region.  Then there are chicken tamales with salsa verde (green sauce), empanadas, pozole, tacos de pastor, asada, chorizo, tripa my mouth is watering as I type.  If you’re having along day and have no desire to cook, just walk down the street and pick your meal.  You can find everything from roasted chicken (mostly free range), fruit salads, Quekas (quesadillas), ice cream and paletas (popsicles), and bingo you had an entire dinner and desert for a very reasonable price.  We also enjoy finding food at the Zocalos (town square), usually there are street vendors in a little carts or some times the food vendor will just set up a small plastic table along the street or park walkway.

If you enjoy something more formal like a sit and dine restaurant, there are more than enough to choose from as well.  Everything from bakeries with coffee shops, Italian cuisine, steak houses, seafood (ceviche, fish tacos, fried fish, camarones al mojo de ajo garlic shrimp), and local gourmet options.  We tend to look around to see which place has the most customers at a given time and follow the crowds. It’s a good indicator of what is the best tasting food and customer friendly establishments.

Another great source of information for finding hidden gems for dinning experiences, are your locals.  They know what’s best and not always interested in the tourist food magnates.  All you need is to strike up a conversation and find some common interests and they are more than happy to share they’re personal favorites and you may even get invited to there homes for some home cooked meals. All this food talk got us hungry!
