Our day to travel had arrived and we were ready. We were traveling with very special “cargo” this time around, our little malti-poo princess Nikki. We had reviewed everything the airline required to bring our pet onboard. Each airline has different requirements, so make sure you check yours carefully. As per our requirements we needed to make sure Nikki had all her shots and her rabies shot was done 30 days prior to the flight. A certificate of good health by the vet was needed signed 5 days prior to flight. We decided we would fly out from Tijuana, MX instead of the US because we heard so many people saying they had some big issues once they arrived with their pets from the US into Mexico. Mexican customs were very strict, sometimes even with all the shots and certificates they somehow still found “something wrong” and pet owners would have to wait at customs with their pet until a licensed vet would show up to administer additional shots and pay additional fees.
Make sure you double check the rules with the airline you will travel with, read very carefully. Sometimes even the pet travel carrier must be special sizes for each airline. However, Nikki did great during the flight she slept the entire time until it was time to get to our connecting flight. I felt bad because I knew she would want to get out and go potty, so I asked someone who worked at the airport where I could take my dog. She said she could go potty on the floor in the ladies’ room and just to make sure to clean up afterwards. It worked well for Nikki and luckily it was not a big mess. That said, this is a big issue with airports, they don’t cater to people traveling with pets so check ahead of time when traveling.
